Before we get into the top three strategies you need for a high growth business, I want to give you a strategy to keep in mind that is practiced by all expert online marketers and that is, The Power of One.

Nail this strategy, and you’ll stop trying to help everybody and you will begin to target only the niche of people who need and appreciate what you do.

When you truly understand the pain and frustration your Ideal Client feels and you know exactly what they need, you can charge premium prices for your services.

So I guess you could say that embracing the amazing power of one means that you choose to narrow down your expertise into a niche where you stand out as a leading expert.

Setting Yourself Up For Success By Defining Your Perfect Customer Avatar

An avatar is a fictitious character that is used to represent your ideal customer. While in time you will most likely have more than one avatar, if you are a new online business start-up, you should focus on only one avatar. And going forward you must focus on one and only one avatar for each marketing campaign you launch.

Let me explain in one sentence why defining your Perfect Client Avatar is one of the most important steps to take to create a successful online marketing business: You need to really know your perfect customer inside and out in order to market and sell  more effectively to them. This is a make or break issue for small business owners.

Ideal Clients are the ones that you want to attract because they are your most profitable client. They are drawn to you at the core of who you are and what you offer. They are attracted to what they see as your values which is why they love to work with you.

Make sure you clearly identify your Ideal Client and get to know them …their hopes, their fears, their problems, etc. before you start thinking about branding so that you can position yourself as the “go-to person” for their specific  needs.

Defining your customer avatar helps to answer the following questions:

    • Where should you advertise to get the maximum exposure to your ideal customer?
    • What types of advertisements typically attract your ideal customer?
    • What should the story and message be to relate to your ideal customer?
    • What products/services do they need?
    • What content appeals to them?
    • What is their most urgent pain or desire?

Ideal clients are drawn to you because they believe you understand them better than anyone—just as if your message and products are a tailored fit for them. (And of course, they are!)

When you nail this strategy, you are ready to launch your online marketing business because, clearly identifying your ideal client also helps you to avoid the misadventure of getting stuck with the client from hell that you want to avoid!

Top 5 Defining Characteristics of an Ideal Client

When it comes down to it, there really are only five characteristics you need to be certain of when defining your ideal client.

  1. Do they have the problem that you solve with your expertise? (How urgent is their problem? Are they actively seeking solutions?)
  2. Do they have both the time and money it takes to buy your product/service? (Can they afford your product/service? Will they make a time commitment?)
  3. Are they easy to locate? (Can you target them online? Which social media groups and forums do they frequent?)
  4. Do they know, like and trust you? (Do they engage with your content? Do they sign up for your free offers?)
  5. Do they have the potential to refer other ideal clients to you? (Do you have referral tools to make it easy for them to refer?)

 Defining Your Customer Avatar

You just can’t be all things to all people and succeed with online business. First you need to target a specific market. Next you need to define your niche. Then you must be specific about who within your niche you want to serve.

To succeed in online marketing, defining your Ideal Customer/Client Avatar is essential. Start by making a list of their demographic and psychographic traits. Brainstorm as much information as you can about them and list it out. Next give this person a name and a face.  You can grab online photos from uifaces.com or create a unique face for your avatar at Face Your Manga where you can create a memorable avatar icon.

When you have a basic idea of who your Ideal Client is, the next step is to define their problems, fears, goals and dreams.  With that information you are ready to create your one-page Ideal Client Profile. Don’t worry about how it sounds or looks; it’s just a good ideal to have a one-page reference handy when you need to write a marketing piece or a sales page.

The final step is to write a hero story about who your avatar is before and after using your product.  Give them a name and imagine what it is like to be them. Imagine the pain and frustration they feel.  Imagine what they do to find solutions.  Think about how excited they are when they have finally found your product/service.

Writing your avatar story will make your Ideal Client come to life.  Instead of thinking of them like a statistic, you will begin to empathize with them and gradually learn to write messages that clearly resonate with them.

Have some fun with your story. The more detailed and descriptive you are, the easier it will be to write website content, marketing messages and sales copy.
